Living on Borrowed Time
Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivative Works 4.0
http://techrights.org/videos/the-clown-and-microsoft.webm
Summary: Accounting fraud (misreporting or misclassifying earnings) will make
Microsoft the next Enron; for the time being, however, Microsoft is trying to
seem very potent and important (in practice it is just viciously attacking in
an effort to sabotage the winners, namely GNU/GPL/Linux/Free software, as
that’s the only method Microsoft understands)
THE VIDEO above speaks of Microsoft’s precarious situation. Bailouts won’t last
forever.
Bogdan Popa joins the chorus of many Microsoft boosters who googlebomb the term
“Linux” because, to quote this_recent_video, “The World Runs On Linux (NOT
Windows!)“.
Microsoft-connected sites are basically posting a lot of “Teams” spam, riding
of piggybacking the word “Linux”. Other such sites say that Microsoft plans to
start charging for ‘premiums’ while throwing ads at Windows users (see [1-3] at
the bottom of this post). How is that going to help Windows adoption? It would
achieve the exact opposite!
Now, back to GNU/Linux, Windows Central says “The best Microsoft Teams
experience on Linux is now a PWA” and another Microsoft booster says “Microsoft
Teams PWA is Now Available for Linux Machines” (but PWA does not count, it is
proprietary, and it is spyware). There’s that old trio (mumble/irc/jabber) that
works better and more reliably than Teams or Slack or all these supposedly
“modern” (bloated) things. We shall do some video about it another day.
Finally, it seems clear that Microsoft is still losing the cash cow, Windows,
which was the gateway to many other “products” and disservices (through
bundling). To keep shareholders around (and artificially floating/inflating the
stock) Microsoft kept talking about Clown Computing and “Azure”. But that
bubble too is starting to burst. The promises have many cracks in them so we
expect the demise to rapidly accelerate soon (like Facebook this past year;
Microsoft and Facebook even started a liaison). █

Freenoding Twitter
Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivative Works 4.0
http://techrights.org/videos/twitter-node.webm
Summary: The collapse of Twitter is starting to closely resemble the collapse
of Freenode last year (Andrew Lee did all the wrong things, worsening an
already grim scenario)
THE ‘talk of the town’ is Elon Musk, who lost_a_ton_of_money_in_estimated
personal_wealth (more than he had spent on Twitter).
This is starting to seem like a familiar story. He is losing his mind, openly
aligning himself with the right almost on election day. Well, Andrew_Lee_said
Biden_"stole"_the_election_on_l0de's_show…
Expect “liberals” to be blamed for all these catastrophes.
Musk now wants to change what the “verification” signs mean and who gets those
signs. It’s only for people who pay Musk. As an associate of ours put it today:
“Lost in all the noise about charging a monthly subscription fee for the “blue
check” on Twitter is the observation that the “blue checks” have been as much
about endorsement as they have been about “verification”…”
Is Musk ‘pulling_a_SASL’_now? Is he just as insane as Lee?
It’s getting worse and worse by the hour (we’ll post more links about this in
the News Roundups). To quote the above: “If Friday brought massive layoffs to
Twitter, Monday brought fresh evidence that the company will never be the same.
Musk has discussed putting the entire site behind a paywall, Platformer has
learned. Meanwhile, the company is scrambling to lure back employees who it
laid off mere hours ago, and some workers say the economics behind its soon-to-
relaunch Twitter Blue subscription could actually lose the company money.”
Not even a month has passed and it seems safe to estimate that most users are
already pissed off and examining alternatives (if any*).
Alexei jokes about Musk mimicking Lee some more: “What next? Channel take-
over?” █
abandon social control media altogether. All of it. You can live a satisfying
life without “likes”. They’re meaningless.

Latest EPO Greenwash
Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivative Works 4.0
http://techrights.org/videos/epo-ev-greenwash.webm
Summary: EPO management keeps posting shallow, superficial, fact-free (or
disinformation) messages; the staff of the EPO isn’t gullible enough to fall
for the lies
THE text below comes from a new letter, which deals with yet another case of
EPO greenwashing; this has been happening so much before that it’s easy to lose
count. In the video above I also show epo.org for its latest greenwashing,
alongsode UPC propaganda (encouraging illegal agenda out in the open) and
femmewashing. Remember that not_many_women_work_at_the_EPO_and_get_promoted,
the EPO basically grants monopolies that curtail climate change mitigation, but
don’t let those realities get in the way of Benoît_Battistelli and António
Campinos, two chronic liars who have long been in cahoots, shaming not just the
EPO but also the EU.
Here’s the text of the letter discussed above (from the Local Staff Committee
Munich or just LSCMN for short):

Dear Mr President,
The EPO has adopted an Environmental Policy (page 3/11) in which:
“Every employee has an important role to play in bringing the EPO one
step closer to carbon neutrality.” In this respect, the EPO aims at
reducing its annual consumption of electricity, water and heat,
producing less residual waste and lowering its CO2 emissions.
The latest Environmental Report (page 40/59) features the CO2
emissions relating to employee commuting and stresses the high
emissions of car transport (0.120 kg CO2e/km), the lesser emissions
of public transport and the neutrality of bike and walking.
In its Communiqué of 6 October 2022, the Office has announced its aim
to drastically increase the number of e-charging stations where
colleagues can charge electric cars for free. The number will more
than double to 738 within one year. On this topic we were approached
by many colleagues who wonder if this measure fits with the EPO
support to Sustainable Mobility Options. Free e-charge stations might
create an unjustified incentive to come to the Office premises by
car. The free e-charging is also introduced at a time the Office has
entered Phase 1 of the Emergency Contingency Plan which aims at
saving on energy consumption in the EPO premises by keeping the
minimum temperature at 19°C.
We also note that the EPO Code Fest is about to start. Some
colleagues informed us that the developed software applications use
APIs strongly relying on GPUs (private or collaborative) which are
high consumers of electric power. In their view the scheduling of the
event appears unfortunate at a time of the year during which energy
will be a well-demanded resource. The official communications by the
EPO on the Code Fest do not mention its potential environmental
impact.
We believe that a consistent approach to sustainability is very
important. That is why we would like to ask you to comment on the
topics above.
With best regards,
Michael Alex Kemény
Chair of the Local Staff Committee Munich City, Haar and Brussels
We’ll hopefully find more time to cover the EPO more frequently some time soon
(in spite of recent hardware problems which we try to overcome). █

Trusting a Court Controlled by Those Who Do Not Obey Courts
Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivative Works 4.0
http://techrights.org/videos/europe-patent-law-ignored.webm
Summary: The European Patent Office (EPO) is revealed as an unrepentant,
unapologetic ‘disser’ of the court system; people rightly ask, how can anyone
expect fair trials at the supposedly ‘Unified Patent Court’, which the EPO
pushes for in spite of severe legal and constitutional issues?
THE staff union of the EPO, or SUEPO for short, has just mentioned an article
on a topic covered_yesterday_afternoon. “Translations are available in German,
French and Dutch,” it said, but those are automated. The letters are from the
Central Staff Committee (CSC), not SUEPO.
The video above speaks about the issue again and notes that comments so far
illuminate the impact on the UPC, which incidentally the EPO is promoting again
this week.
A reader has meanwhile warned us about this pro-UPC conference “with all the
usual boosters, no critics invited” (not even critics of the legality of UPC).
“Worst speakers list you cannot expect,” the reader said.
Remember the complaint that was filed in Germany back in 2017. It apparently
(despite being hidden, then sold as a book) made the point that if judges’
tenure is contingent upon appeasing some patent maximalists (like senior BOA
judges at the EPO) periodically, e.g. every 5 years, then judges are
incentivised to rule “for career safety” instead of “for justice”. There_are
lots_of_constitutional_issues_associated_with_the_UPC, aside for blatant
conflicts of interest [1, 2]. █

Tuxedo Computers offers an unusual machine: a Linux-based
laptop with, of all things, a mechanical keyboard.
The Bavaria-based company offers a range of guaranteed
Linux-compatible laptops (and a few desktops, which tend
to be a bit easier in compatibility terms: it’s easier to
swap bits in and out ’til it all works). We mentioned the
release of Tuxedo Computers’ new AMD-powered laptop and
the company’s external liquid-cooling system in the
summer.
The company asked us if we would be interested in getting
a review model of one of the machines, and with a handful
of models with mechanical keyboards, our interest was
piqued.

Having just switched work laptops last December, I

asked!

Google’s ChromeOS is incredibly popular, particularly

There is a slight learning curve to it though, especially

In “That’s Awesome!” news: The Ladybird web browser — the

Think about how awesome that is for a web browser that

For decades Debian and Ubuntu users used apt-get

Irrespective of the progress bar, the packages get

But the progress bar enhances the user experience

Why am I telling you all this? Because I got an

TCP is an amazing protocol that was designed 40
years ago when the [Internet] looked rather
different than it does today; it is surprising that
it has lasted as long as it has with the changes in
the network over that span. Even today, it works
well for wide-area networks, but there were no data
centers when TCP was designed, “so unsurprisingly
it was not designed for data centers”. Ousterhout
said that he would argue that every major aspect of
the TCP design is wrong for data centers. “I am not
able to identify anything about TCP that is right
for the data center.”

Increases in depression without commensurate

study conducted at Columbia University Mailman
School of Public Health and City University of New

prevalent among nearly one in ten Americans and
almost one in five adolescents and young adults.
The findings are published online in the American
Journal of Preventive Medicine.
Data were drawn from the 2015−2020 National Survey
on Drug Use and Health, a nationally representative
study of U.S. individuals aged 12 years and older.
Major depression is the most common mental disorder
in the U.S. and is the strongest risk factor for
suicide behavior. Previous findings show an
increase in depression in the U.S. population from
6.6 percent in 2005 to 7.3 percent in 2015.
“Our study updates the depression prevalence
estimates for the U.S. population through the year
2020 and confirms escalating increases in
depression from 2015 through 2019, reflecting a
public health crisis that was intensifying in the
U.S. even before the onset of the pandemic,” said
Renee D. Goodwin, PhD, an adjunct professor in the
Department of Epidemiology at Columbia Mailman
School of Public Health, professor of epidemiology
at The City University of New York, and lead
author. “The net effect of these trends suggests an
accelerating public health crisis and that parity

achieved equity in depression treatment.”

After a middle-aged woman tested positive for
Covid-19 in January at her workplace in Fairbanks,
public health workers sought answers to questions
vital to understanding how the virus was spreading
in Alaska’s rugged interior.
The woman, they learned, had underlying conditions
and had not been vaccinated. She had been
hospitalized but had recovered. Alaska and many
other states have routinely collected that kind of
information about people who test positive for the
virus. Part of the goal is to paint a detailed
picture of how one of the worst scourges in
American history evolves and continues to kill
hundreds of people daily, despite determined
efforts to stop it.
But most of the information about the Fairbanks
woman — and tens of millions more infected
Americans — remains effectively lost to state and
federal epidemiologists. Decades of underinvestment
in public health information systems has crippled
efforts to understand the pandemic, stranding
crucial data in incompatible data systems so
outmoded that information often must be repeatedly
typed in by hand. The data failure, a salient
lesson of a pandemic that has killed more than one
million Americans, will be expensive and time-
consuming to fix.

how there’s a war against science-based regulation

a war against science-based policies regarding drug
approval, vaccine mandates, and public health. This
war predates the pandemic, and not by a little. For
example, previously I wrote about how autism and
cancer quack Dr. Rashid Buttar had mobilized public
support to neuter the North Carolina Medical Board
and prevent it from disciplining doctors who
practice quackery associated with “integrative
medicine”. This happened 13 years ago. Since then,
this war on the regulation of medicine has only
accelerated, as I’ve described before a number of
times. Unfortunately, last week it became
increasingly clear that this war is only
accelerating, and it involves old school antivax
physicians who have taken advantage of the rise of
what I like to refer to as the “new school”
antivaxxers who only started promoting antivaccine
propaganda after the introduction of COVID-19
vaccines nearly two years ago. It’s gotten to the
point where “new school” antivaxxers are becoming
increasingly indistinguishable from “old school”

Moscow’s claims the measure was necessary because
Ukraine is planning an attack on the Kakhovka

massive flooding, though according to Ukrainian
President Volodymyr, it’s Russian forces themselves
who have mined the power station. In reality,
Moscow fears that a large-scale Ukrainian

has begun laying the groundwork to explain a
Russian retreat to the public if need be. Meduza

The modellers estimate that if every national
climate goal for the end of this decade were met,
including those conditional on money promised by
rich countries actually turning up, then average
global temperatures would rise by 2.4°C by 2100. If
mid-century net-zero pledges are met, it could mean
just 1.8°C of warming, but the report’s authors
warn repeatedly that this is “currently not
credible” (see chart). Existing climate
policies—real action on the ground, not just
promises—equate to 2.8°C of warming by 2100. These
findings are consistent with a similar analysis by
the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the
main forum for international climate talks.
Climate models suggest that, to avoid more than
1.5°C of warming, greenhouse-gas emissions must
peak before 2025 and then fall by 43% from 2019
levels by 2030. Systems Change Lab, a conglomerate
of environmental organisations and think-tanks, has
translated these reductions into 40 indicators,
each with a 2030 target. In its report, the State
of Climate Action 2022, it finds not a single one
of them on track for 1.5°C. Five are heading in the
wrong direction entirely. For example, the share of
electricity generated by “unabated fossil gas”
(natural gas burned without capturing the resulting
carbon dioxide) has actually risen in recent years.
Similarly, the amount of CO2 generated for each
unit of steel produced has increased, and food
production is emitting more than it did five years
ago.

being a homeland of all Jews, everywhere – not of
Palestine’s own native inhabitants – and on a
bloody foundation, that of the Nakba and the
destruction of historic Palestine and the expulsion
of its people.
Such beginnings were hardly conducive to the
establishment of a real democracy, perfect or
blemished. Not only did Israel’s discriminatory
attitude persist throughout the years, it actually
worsened, especially as the Palestinian Arab
population rose disproportionally compared to the
Jewish population between the Jordan River and the
Mediterranean Sea.

A clear demonstration that the EU Copyright
Directive is a badly-drafted law is the fact
that it has still not been implemented in
national legislation by all the EU Member
States three years after it was passed, and
over a year after the nominal deadline for
doing so. That’s largely because of the
upload filters of Article 17. The requirement
to block copyrighted material without
authorisation while fully preserving users’
rights is probably impossible to put in place
in any straightforward way. As a result,
national legislators have had to come up with
various kinds of approximations when drawing
up their local laws.
Over on the Communia blog, Paul Keller has a
good exploration of how the Czech Republic is
tackling the issue. The current Czech
proposal is particularly interesting because
it is one of the first to be available after
the EU’s top court, the Court of Justice of
the European Union (CJEU), brought a little
clarity on the safeguards that need to be
included in national implementations of
Article 17.

number of someones, suggested that Mastodon
is a great place to move to from Twitter, and
the people came. The instance where my
account lives saw a doubling of accounts in
about two days, before the admin prudently
shut down new registrations.
The problem is, as quickly as our admin
acted, he probably wasn’t quick enough. That
second day of the mass influx the server was
obviously under a torture test and the
hardware must have been running literally
flat out to keep up with demand, a task that
it was very much failing at as posts on
everyone’s timeline were running six to eight
hours behind. More, in the case of federated
content. And our instance was only one of the
many that was having issues, with some of
them being hit much harder.
Now, as a Geminaut, I’m used to back and

o ⚓ 9to5Linux ☛ 9to5Linux_Weekly_Roundup:_November_6th,_2022⠀⇛
This week was all about software and distro releases,
starting with Linux Lite 6.2, OBS Studio 28.1,
SuperTuxKart 1.4, Nitrux 2.5, Ardour 7.1, LXQt 1.2, and
PeppermintOS’ November 2022 release.
Also this week, the LibreOffice 7.3 office suite received
its last maintenance update as the end of life
approaches, and Arch Linux’s ISO snapshot for November
2022 ships with Linux kernel 6.0 by default. Below, you
can enjoy these and much more in 9to5Linux’s Linux weekly

Android developer Danny Lin (also known as kdrag0n), has
introduced a new app called Nestbox that makes it easy to
run Linux virtual machines on Google’s latest Pixel
phones.
In a nutshell, this lets you run Linux tools and apps on
an Android phone without the need to reboot. While this
isn’t the first app that lets you do that, there are a
few things that make kdrag0n’s Nestbox stand out.

Nicolai Electronics’ rp2040-ic2-interface open-source
firmware for the Raspberry Pi Pico (or other Raspberry Pi
RP2040 boards) converts the board into an I2C to USB
bridge to connect any I2C sensor or module to a PC or
other hardware without GPIOs.
The firmware implements the USB protocol expected by the
I2C-Tiny-USB kernel driver used by the original I2C-Tiny-
USB project for Microchip ATMega 8-bit AVR
microcontrollers. The RP2040 is however not a fork of the
original project, but instead a complete re-
implementation of the firmware.

We have covered several open-source tools for

One of them is Ghostwriter. It is available for
Linux and Windows with an unofficial build for
macOS.
I will not blame you for accidentally reading it as

Keeping that aside, it looks like Ghostwriter is
now under KDE’s umbrella, with Carl Schwan (KDE

Hence, I think it is a good idea to spotlight KDE’s

Guide⠀⇛
This guide will teach you all you need to know to
get started with firewalld to add, change, and
remove rules from your firewall zones.
Nowadays, configuring and implementing a reliable
firewall for your servers and network is a must.
Without it, the question is no longer if but when
malicious attacks will harm you, unfortunately, are
common on the Internet these days.
This is where Firewalld comes into play. Firewalld,
the default firewall in Linux distros such as Red
Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora, Oracle Linux,
openSUSE, AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, and others,
provides all the protection you need to secure your
servers and network. But before we get into how to
use it, let’s first explain what it is.

Fitzcarraldo’s_Blog⠀⇛
An external USB disk drive is connected permanently
to my family’s PC that currently has Lubuntu 22.04
installed. There are several user accounts on this
multi-user single-seat machine. If a user does not
unmount the external drive before logging out, when
another user logs in, the external drive is still
mounted with the priviledges of the previous user.
In the days when Lubuntu used LightDM and LXDE, I
devised a scheme to unmount automatically the
external drive when each user logged out (see an
earlier post). However, that method is no longer
possible now Lubuntu no longer uses LightDM.
Therefore I devised a different scheme. This time,
the external drive is unmounted automatically every
time a user logs in, and udisks2 automatically
mounts it for the current user. Below I explain the
new scheme. In the example below the external USB
drive happens to be an NTFS drive and have the
label ‘FREECOM HDD’. The machine actually has
several user accounts but, for the sake of brevity,
the commands for only two users are shown. All the
steps shown below are performed by the account
holder with the ability to use the sudo command to
get superuser priviledges.

RG353M is the RG353P but with a different shell.
Specifically, the RG353M features the same 3.5-inch
IPS display as its siblings, which operates at 640
x 480 pixels. Additionally, Anbernic includes a
Rockchip RK3566 chipset, 2 GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 32
GB of eMMC 5.1 flash storage. Moreover, the gaming
handheld has a 3,500 mAh battery and is capable of
dual-booting Android 11 or Linux. For reference,
the RG353M measures 145 x 70.5 x 15.9 mm and weighs
232 g. Likewise, the device has two microSD card
slots, two USB Type-C ports, a 3.5 mm jack, an HDMI
output and the usual array of gamepad controls.
Currently, Anbernic sells the RG353M directly or
via AliExpress. It is worth noting that while
AliExpress orders are US$12 more expensive on the
face of it, the retailer includes free shipping. In
comparison, Anbernic charges US$12 in shipping when
ordering the RG353M directly, eliminating the price
difference entirely.

It’s been some time since the last Zenwalk Current
ISO, so here it is.
Most packages have been rebuilt here or upstream.
Since 18 years Zenwalk follow the same guideline :
being the only true 100% Slackware compatible
striped-down optimized system.
The main change in Zenwalk design lately, is the
return of Mozilla Firefox as main browser. Due to
the lack of improvements, especially performances
issues and instability in Chromium. I also believe
that privacy can be more easily achieved with
Mozilla Firefox.
The Zenwalk “SlackBuild” packaging utility has also
been updated so that it now allows to build
Slackware packages from any source tarball without
any configuration, as well as from any .DEB Debian
binary as long as it’s using the same toolchain and
shared libs as Zenwalk, as well as from any Github
URL.
You’ll also notice some improvements in Netpkg :
the multi-repository, dependency aware, package
management system.

Companies are like high-performance engines –
they’re optimized over time to create the greatest
output. They handle small incremental changes and
fine-tuning well but often break down when broader
changes and rebuilding are needed.
Enter the digital transformation journey. How can
companies learn how to shift quickly to meet the
needs of their customers, employees, and the market
when incremental progress isn’t working? What roles
can help ensure success along the way?
In my experience, it’s best to focus on a “top-
down” and “bottom-up” transformation plan to
increase the potential for success and encourage
more people to join the journey. Remember, each
employee has their journey to consider, and it’s
important to bring people along to help them see
themselves on the other side of change.
For a successful transformation, someone needs to
own the why, what, when, and how of the journey.
The following three critical roles represent these
key components, each integral to success.

“Introduction to the ‘Limo Stretch’ feature of

the predefined shapes”. The first one is addressed
at developers, whereas the second one is suitable
for everyone. You find the slides and additional
material here and here. Videos of my talks are

It was important for me to gain insights into other
areas. The Community Meetings on Wednesday
introduced me to the problems that LibreOffice
communities have in several regions of the world,
along with solutions and success stories from
others. During the conference, I heard a lot about
language-specific aspects of LibreOffice. Do you
have ever think about the way a piece of text in
Arabic is justified? Or noticed what special
problems occur with writing directions top-to-
bottom and then right-to-left as used in Japanese?
Last but not least, I enjoyed personally meeting
community members. Having lunch together and the
wonderful pasta community dinner were opportunities
to get to know each other, beyond code review,
Bugzilla and mailing lists. I hope to meet you all
again at next LibreOffice Conference.

Performance⠀⇛
A few years ago, a small group of engineers
at Mozilla introduced a process to identify
the tasks that would have the greatest impact
on the performance of Firefox. They would
gather each week to look over user submitted
profiles, and discuss bugs reports. Each bug
would then be assigned a category and a score
to reflect its impact on performance. This
would help teams to prioritise their work for
performance, and proved crucial in delivering
the significant speed improvements that were
present in Firefox Quantum.
Fast forward to today, and this performance
triage process has continued, but you’d be
forgiven for not knowing about it. This year
we have been making improvements to the way
bugs are nominated for triage, how the impact
and keywords are determined, and getting more
people involved. I’d like to share some of
these changes with you, starting with how to
request a performance impact review for a
bug.

with CXL at the endpoints of servers and memory
devices. Now, we have another on that is using a

protocol on servers to create sharable extended
memory that will range up to 16 TB on a single

granted British citizenship through his mother in
December 2021, and is now in desperate need of
immediate intervention. Alaa’s family fears that
his life is in acute danger: he has now been on
hunger strike for more than 200 days, consuming
roughly 100 calories a day. When COP begins on
November 6th, he will begin a full hunger strike
and stop drinking water entirely. In a letter to
his mother announcing this decision and explaining
his rationale, Alaa wrote: “I’ve taken a decision
to escalate at a time I see as fitting for my
struggle for my freedom and the freedom of
prisoners of a conflict they’ve no part in, or
they’re trying to exit from; for the victims of a
regime that’s unable to handle its crises except
with oppression, unable to reproduce itself except
through incarceration.”

While the Senate Judiciary Committee markup
of the Journalism Competition and
Preservation Act (JCPA) may have moved the
bill forward in terms of process, it did
nothing to resolve the ongoing problems,
confusion, and contradictions about the
legislation.
We’ve analyzed and written about the JCPA a
lot (see additional resources). We recognize
and have written about the crisis in local
news (for example, here), and seek policy
solutions designed to meet the information
needs of communities (for example, here). In
fact, we have developed some of our own (see
our “Superfund for the Internet” proposal
here).
But even after multiple amendments and much
discussion, the JCPA remains the wrong
solution. It compounds some of the biggest
problems in our information environment and
it does absolutely nothing to “rein in Big
Tech.”
If you haven’t been tracking the debate, you
should find this post a fresh if consistent
take on what critics say about the JCPA –
what it is, where it is now, what’s broken
about it – and what Congress should do now.

In the blorb style, the most important role of the
dungeon master is to be the keeper of secrets. Your
players can help you with rule calls, book keeping,
initiative stuff, tracking HP, and so much more,
but it’s your job to make sure they don’t know what
they haven’t discovered yet, and reveal it to them
as their character learns it.
That’s the main reason you even have a DM role at
the table instead of playing all coop, going
through a dungeon together. One person takes it
upon herself to have that map and key and text in
front of her, getting spoiled by its secrets, and
keeping them from the players and their characters
until they’ve turned the appropriate stones and
pulled the correct levers.
# ⚓ Moneyless_Friday⠀⇛
With Black Friday coming up soon I was thinking of
an anti-consumerist and environmentally-friendly
antithesis to it. In a sense the opposite of
spending money on unnecessary things is to not
spend money at all.
Moneyless Friday takes place on the same day as
Black Friday. The idea is to refrain from making
any transactions involving money for a twenty-four
hour period. That means buying groceries or any
essentials in advance, meeting with friends at home
or public spaces instead of cafes or pubs and
limiting transportation to foot and human-powered
vehicles. Using non-electric motor vehicles is
discouraged for environmental reasons. Limiting
your energy use during Moneyless Friday is another
goal. The essence of Moneyless Friday is to
challenge capitalism, consumerism and waste. Any
action along these lines is encouraged during
Moneyless Friday.

As is often the case these dark winter seasons,
I’ve fallen into a bit of a funk. Inspiration it
seems is as rare as sunlight, and sunlight is
scarce indeed in the winters of the north.
I do know what is missing, novelty. I’ve fallen
into consuming “content”. Infinite scroll is the
torture rack of the spirit. What is necessary doing
new things and seeing new inspiring sights,
exposing myself to new inspiring thoughts.
Given a lack of options, I perused the section of
my bookshelf that contains books I have not yet
read, and after some vacillation decided on
Herodotus’ Histories.

i saw someone attributing this feeling is the

When we moved about six months ago we were looking
forward to being closer to places we want and need
to go. We like to ride our bikes, ebikes and walk
so this was a big part of our decision to move
where we did. Well after six months I can say that
I’m loving it. We walk to the farmers market
downtown with the kids in the stroller most
Saturday mornings and to other events that happen
downtown at various other times. I take our oldest
to school and pick him up on the ebike every day. I
do our grocery shopping with the ebike and trailer.
Lately when I go to play pick up soccer I take the
ebike as well. We go visit friends on the ebikes,
we walk to parks, walk to get our hair cut, get
lunch, coffee etc. The other night we rode the
bikes down to the brewery we like to go to and our
neighbor pulled up on her bike about 15 minutes
later. So we had a couple beers with her and all
rode back together and had a nice chat and cruise.

God gave us clear skies for a few hours on the

making stargazing very difficult, but the cloud
situation has been so poor that one must take
whatever opportunities are available.
I spent some time looking at the moon with the

Jupiter. I recently bought a Night Sky Observation

sketches neater and more fun.

The entire universe gets divided by a two-

through me, standing in that window, perpendicular
to my line of sight as I look forward into the dark

I’d never heard of Johann Nepomuk Hummel. I found
him at the bottom of a long list of playlists of
“well known” composers¹. So I gave him a go.
I don’t get on with Mozart so well. Too many notes.
He’d squeeze in as many trills as he could². Hummel
isn’t so far off Mozart but he gives things a bit
more space. Sometimes he’s surprisingly modern.
Some of his instrument choices are surprising too.
I’ve never heard a mandolin concerto before. The
orchestra had to play pretty quietly or the
mandolin would have disappeared. There’s a lot of
piano pieces accompanied by only a few string
players, which again gives a pleasing amount of
space. The playlist is a bit over six hours and
it’s all good so far.

As a kid I had a near total recall. I memorized and
recited chunks of ‘the Odyssey’. I read my mother’s
math textbooks (she was a math teacher), and skated
through math with very little work. I even got into
a specialized NYC math/science high school with a
perfect math score, in spite of almost non-existent
English.

There appears to be some magic stoichiometric

force myself to take a break somewhere far away
from any keyword for a day or two, the ideas start
to roll in at a pace where I can barely keep up to
write them down.

completely from scratch, so it’s not based on some
other distribution like Debian GNU/Linux or Arch

because this is one of the more outstanding
features of the distro among others. It utilizes
the runit init system instead of systemd, which is
fast and simple. The update strategy is the “stable
rolling release” model. The packages are more well
tested and a little behind the bleeding edge
packages you get with something like Arch Linux.

This is not just some rant from an angry (former)

# ⚓ Our_responsibility_as_software_engineers⠀⇛
On Twitter, an ex-Twitter engineer called Steve
Krenzel talk about his job and we can infer that
it’s not different from Google/Facebook/Microsoft.
While we have no confirmation that this is true,
there’s no particular reason to doubt what is said.
There’s no huge secret. But this serves as a
reminder.
A reminder that it is normal that any application
on your phone is registering every single action
you are doing, every single location and beaming
those info back.
A reminder that companies are buying those data
and, no, they don’t care about privacy. They want
hard data on individuals. And they got them.
A reminder that this is the world we are currently
living in with phones recording position and sound
everywhere. For one story where the engineer
refused to do it, how many times was it done
silently?
As software engineers, we have a huge moral
responsibility. We are not only implementing it, we
are ourselves using those tools and letting our
family and children using them.

In case “slapping trouts” doesn’t ring a

If you have a tree that’s almost perfect, but

It’s a combination of strse* from the strse

The first argument is the tree you wanna fix,
followed by zero or more matches and
replacements (so an even number), followed by
zero or one alist of tags and bindings.
