[10:26] schestowitz OpenZFS Series: Differentiating between Data Security and Data Integrity

[10:26] -TechBytesBot/#techbytes-klarasystems.com | OpenZFS - Data Security vs. Data Integrity

[10:26] schestowitz

[10:26] schestowitz ZFS has many built-in features that add extra layers of protection against data integrity issues and helps protect files against prying eyes. Other filesystems provide only a standard-set of these protections, some of which cost extra money or effort to implement. With the open source and freely available version of ZFS, users have a powerful platform for their most important information. Especially the

[10:26] schestowitz integrity checking is worth checking ZFS out for.

[10:26] schestowitz Dont worry about this being a complex task. ZFS does many of these validations during normal operation and the default settings are good for most people. The ZFS encryption feature is both flexible and secure, giving administrators a choice to set different keys for each dataset to isolate them from different users.

[10:30] schestowitz Arduino resurrects a washing machine that failed for silly reasons

[10:30] -TechBytesBot/#techbytes-blog.arduino.cc | Arduino resurrects a washing machine that failed for silly reasons | Arduino Blog

[10:30] schestowitz

[10:30] schestowitz Prashanth solved this problem using an Arduino Mega 2560. He determined that the Whirpools control board sends data to the display module via I2C and expects a confirmation from the module. Instead of trying to replicate the complete functionality of the display module, Prashanth chose to omit the display altogether it is, after all, unnecessary. He put the Arduino in the display modules place and

[10:30] schestowitz programmed it to simply blink an LED when it receives I2C messages from the control board. It then sends a confirmation back to the control board, tricking it into proceeding with the normal wash cycle.

[10:34] schestowitz

[10:34] schestowitz The report highlights the main achievements of our open source community. Among those, in 2022 we had three new open source hardware products, the new Lab for MicroPython, the language discussion space, 1,042 new libraries (+25% in one year), 421 new open source tutorials on Project Hub, 84 new releases of Arduino cores, and the ranking of the most active library maintainers.

[11:34] schestowitz

[11:34] schestowitz Until developments in the autumn of this year in the Finnish Parliament, we have been unaware of the fundamental human right to education and science being used in practice by European legislators to challenge the broadening scope of exclusive rights under copyright law.
