[07:50] schestowitz CentOS 9 Stream - Too early to have full-blown desktop fun
[07:50] -TechBytesBot/#techbytes- ( status 404 @ https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/centos-9-stream.html">CentOS )
[07:50] schestowitz
[07:50] schestowitz Before you say anything, no, this isn't an article about CentOS dying, the competition and all the rest. No, this is Dedoimedo looking at CentOS, the way he's looked at it since version 5, having enjoyed many a moment polishing and tweaking it into a perfect desktop, even though it was never really meant to be used in that fashion. But then, the Stream edition kind of changed that. Or did it?
[07:50] schestowitz Today, I want to look at the newly released CentOS 9. See how it fares on modern laptop hardware, see if I can use it for home tasks with the same elegance and fun as the past versions, explore what it can or cannot do, given its broad and somewhat vague mission. Well, let us commence.

[08:23] schestowitz I'm announcing availability of GNU Screen v.4.9.0

[08:24] schestowitz PinePhone community poll results
[08:24] schestowitz
[08:24] -TechBytesBot/#techbytes-www.pine64.org | PINEPHONE | PINE64
[08:24] schestowitz Throughout January we ran a poll asking people about how they use their PinePhones. Some poll results are quite predictable while others yielded unexpected results. Before we start, let me put on my academic hat for just one minute. This is a small, self-reported and not representative sample. A total of 3079 respondents took part in the poll which amounts to less than 5% of all PinePhone owners. Id therefore hesitate
[08:24] schestowitz to extrapolate any of the results to the entire PinePhone community. I find it more likely that this sample reflects the most active community members and people following our project. It is also worth mentioning that some questions posed in the poll werent exactly well phrased, and that the poll itself did not follow any established conventions. But this was never meant to be a comprehensive study it is instead, at best, a peak at the
[08:24] schestowitz overarching trends of the most active portion of the community. To this end, when describing the results Ill use descriptive generalizations, such as more than half or the majority, rather than exact numbers or percentages I feel that this is more in line with the nature of the data and the general spirit of the poll. For what its worth, Ill also share some of my thoughts and insights as we review the results. Exact numbers and
[08:24] schestowitz percentages are, however, included in the graphs.
[08:24] schestowitz As always, I encourage you to share your thoughts about the results in the comments section.
[08:24] schestowitz Thank you to all those who took the time to fill in the questionnaire!

[08:34] schestowitz Reasons for servers to support IPv6
[08:34] -TechBytesBot/#techbytes- ( status 404 @ https://jvns.ca/blog/2022/01/29/reasons-for-servers-to-support-ipv6/">Reasons )
[08:34] schestowitz
[08:34] schestowitz I found this really confusing, because Ive always heard that lots of internet users are forced to use IPv6 because weve run out of IPv4 addresses. But if thats true, how could twitter.com continue to work for those people without IPv6 support? Heres what I learned from the Twitter thread yesterday.
