06:39 DaemonFC; The first Rambo movie was actually pretty good.
06:39 DaemonFC; The first one had a strong liberal message.
06:39 DaemonFC; A guy who had been drafted into the Vietnam War and had his head messed up by everything that happened over there gets harassed, beaten, and triggered by a small town cop that probably supported the war, which violated his civil rights and used the vagrancy laws against him.
06:39 DaemonFC; Everything that follows is the fault of the unnecessary police escalation, but it's Rambo who gets punished anyway.
06:39 DaemonFC; Ryan Farmer-Alcaraz
06:39 DaemonFC; @DaemonFC
06:39 DaemonFC; There's actually been some real life "Rambo" style incidents caused by the police "just doing their jobs".
06:39 DaemonFC; It wasn't that long ago, perhaps a few weeks, that a Sheriff's deputy in Arizona got shot to death while trying to evict someone that had fallen on hard times and fell behind with his millionaire landlord, who paid a court to throw him out without trying to help.
06:39 DaemonFC; Then after that happens, and the guy committed suicide, they had a parade for the dead cop that was trying to ruin his life.
06:39 DaemonFC; Ryan Farmer-Alcaraz
06:39 DaemonFC; @DaemonFC
06:39 DaemonFC; About half the time I see "police officer killed" stories in the news, I have a hard time sympathizing with them based on what they were doing leading up to that.
06:39 DaemonFC; I'm not going to go so far as to say they had it coming, but when your career is seeing people at their most vulnerable and then giving them that one last push over the edge, you shouldn't really be all that surprised to find out that some of those people will end up being dangerous.

13:22 schestowitz[TR]; maybe your posts on nature danny and admins like
13:22 schestowitz[TR]; but some other issues you talk about danny agrees on, but admin reviles
13:22 schestowitz[TR]; tl;dr use rss
13:22 immibis; doesn't have to fully agree, just not completely block things danny wants to see.
13:23 schestowitz[TR]; look... I had THREE mastodon accounts
13:23 schestowitz[TR]; or ratherm,
13:23 schestowitz[TR]; one mastodon
13:23 schestowitz[TR]; one pleroma
13:23 schestowitz[TR]; one gnusocial
13:23 schestowitz[TR]; all in fediverse
13:23 schestowitz[TR]; all instances shut down
13:23 schestowitz[TR]; the admin threw in the towel
13:23 schestowitz[TR]; I had NO say on the matter
13:23 schestowitz[TR]; even if I wanted to adopt those instance
13:23 schestowitz[TR]; same thing happened in joindispora this past february
13:24 immibis; welcome to centralization. If you used your own instance, no problem
13:24 schestowitz[TR]; so speech or not speech, someone else's economics affect your speech
13:24 schestowitz[TR]; worse
13:24 schestowitz[TR]; even if my instance there there
13:24 schestowitz[TR]; and some other people relied on a shut-down instance
13:24 schestowitz[TR]; they'd lose sight
13:24 schestowitz[TR]; they depend on some accoutn somewhere
13:24 schestowitz[TR]; with rss readers:
13:24 schestowitz[TR]; they downloadd it
13:24 immibis; that's no different to google reader shutting down
13:24 schestowitz[TR]; they keep it
13:24 schestowitz[TR]; they can change rss reader
13:25 schestowitz[TR]; and keep the links in apml
13:25 schestowitz[TR]; opml
13:25 immibis; they can follow you on their new instance, too
13:25 schestowitz[TR]; immibis: yes, gulag reader was NOT an rss READER
13:25 schestowitz[TR]; ir was clown computing
13:25 schestowitz[TR]; a
13:25 schestowitz[TR]; risky trap
13:25 schestowitz[TR]; outsourcing
13:25 schestowitz[TR]; "saas"
13:25 schestowitz[TR]; suicide
13:25 schestowitz[TR]; also surveillance
13:25 immibis; so using someone else's instance is not social media
13:25 schestowitz[TR]; and also subjected to arbitrary censorhsip

13:25 schestowitz[TR]; e.g. quiterss
13:26 schestowitz[TR]; save the binary just in case
13:26 schestowitz[TR]; though you can change to another reaeer
13:26 schestowitz[TR]; save your opml file
13:26 schestowitz[TR]; refresh
13:26 schestowitz[TR]; have fun
13:26 immibis; run your own instance and no censorship
13:26 schestowitz[TR]; wrong
13:26 schestowitz[TR]; others would potentially be denied access
13:26 schestowitz[TR]; they may be bossed by dodgy admins
13:27 schestowitz[TR]; and changing instances is NOT easy
13:27 immibis; that's their fault for using gulag reader. nothing you can do about it. tell them to run their own instances too
13:27 immibis; what you are talking about is no different from people choosing to use gulag reader and then not being able to read certain feed
13:28 immibis; s
13:28 schestowitz[TR]; but wait..
13:28 schestowitz[TR]; we try to communicate the issues
13:28 schestowitz[TR]; and fiind something close to optimal
13:28 schestowitz[TR]; fediverse is suboptimal
13:28 schestowitz[TR]; been there, done that
13:28 schestowitz[TR]; with 3 pieces of software as the platformm
13:29 schestowitz[TR]; after 3 (strikes and OUT!) I gave up
13:29 schestowitz[TR]; and if I ran my own instance, similar issues
13:29 schestowitz[TR]; fediverse is the next fad
13:29 schestowitz[TR]; twitter is a passing fad
13:29 immibis; what you are talking about is no different from people choosing to use gulag reader and then not being able to read certain feeds
13:29 schestowitz[TR]; fediverse imitates something shitty
13:29 schestowitz[TR]; bloigs are better
13:30 schestowitz[TR]; gulag reader is like this:
13:30 schestowitz[TR]; I have rss reader
13:30 schestowitz[TR]; I say, hey
13:30 schestowitz[TR]; why use bandwidth
13:30 schestowitz[TR]; (like refresh many sites every 60 mins
13:30 schestowitz[TR]; so I let Gulag manage it all for me
13:30 schestowitz[TR]; but then Gulag doesn't make money
13:30 schestowitz[TR]; or rss harms ad revenue
13:30 schestowitz[TR]; so it shuts me out
13:30 schestowitz[TR]; as happened to many
13:30 schestowitz[TR]; not sure they even let you export feeds
13:30 schestowitz[TR]; I never used it
13:31 schestowitz[TR]; another issue:
13:31 immibis; someone else's instance is like: I have my own instance. I say, hey, why use bandwidth. So I let admin@denny.org manage it all for me.
13:31 schestowitz[TR]; downtime.
13:31 schestowitz[TR]; feedlounge had this issue
13:31 schestowitz[TR]; you cannot read your feed because someone elsse's computer has downtime
13:31 schestowitz[TR]; even gulag has downtime
13:31 immibis; you are literally just complaining about the problems of using google reader, but s/rss/fediverse/
13:31 schestowitz[TR]; if you run the reader locally, only your own downtime or downtime of pertinent sites affect syou
13:31 immibis; and the solution is the same: don't use google reader, use your own reader
13:31 schestowitz[TR]; if the latter, it might affect just 1% of what you are reading at the time
13:32 schestowitz[TR]; yes, use your own reader
13:32 schestowitz[TR]; on the lcoal network
13:32 schestowitz[TR]; and use rss only
13:32 schestowitz[TR]; one site, one blog
13:32 schestowitz[TR]; no "planets"
13:32 schestowitz[TR]; planets are the "admin" problem
13:32 schestowitz[TR]; planets hide voice they don't like
13:32 immibis; and so use your own activitypub instance as well, so people can follow you. Do RSS as well, why not.
13:32 schestowitz[TR]; without asking you
13:32 schestowitz[TR]; without telling you
13:33 schestowitz[TR]; immibis: but then you have more censors
13:33 schestowitz[TR]; better to channel people to your rss feed
13:33 schestowitz[TR]; rather than some transient thing
13:33 schestowitz[TR]; that might not even exist years later
13:33 schestowitz[TR]; people tend to follow one person by one thing
13:33 schestowitz[TR]; like email onlly
13:33 schestowitz[TR]; rss only
13:33 immibis; schestowitz[TR]: You have exactly the same number of censors.
13:33 schestowitz[TR]; so choose wisely
13:33 immibis; You, your admin, your reader's admin, and your reader. Same as RSS.
13:34 schestowitz[TR]; many poltiicians have long relied on "tweets" to read constiuents
13:34 schestowitz[TR]; with twitter going down the drain so will their political outreach and infleucne
13:34 schestowitz[TR]; no, in blogs you have not many censors
13:34 schestowitz[TR]; it's your isp
13:34 schestowitz[TR]; and the registrar
13:34 schestowitz[TR]; for sites you follow
13:35 schestowitz[TR]; and they very very rarely stand in the eay

13:37 schestowitz[TR]; sites pay the registrar
13:37 schestowitz[TR]; you pay your isp
13:37 schestowitz[TR]; they don't have the incentive to censor paying clients
13:37 schestowitz[TR]; hence, they very rarely do this

13:38 immibis; the conclusion is still: there is no censorship difference between RSS or fediverse. In both cases, if your reader chooses to not self-host, the host can censor them
13:39 XRevan86; Atom/RSS is literally just a format of information presentation, there's no communication there.
13:41 schestowitz[TR]; XRevan86: but wait
13:41 schestowitz[TR]; rss is available
13:41 schestowitz[TR]; for pertinent postsc

13:42 schestowitz[TR]; and there are pingback etc.
13:42 schestowitz[TR]; so you can communiate via comments

13:42 MinceR; from what i can see, no they don't
13:42 schestowitz[TR]; you enter a comment
13:43 schestowitz[TR]; then flag the item for later
13:43 XRevan86; schestowitz: Even in this case Atom/RSS is used to track the chat, not to chat.
13:43 schestowitz[TR]; otr you can add the rss feed for comments on that post
13:43 schestowitz[TR]; that's how we used to do that
13:43 MinceR; 17 141007 < schestowitz[TR]> fedivere=many musks
13:43 MinceR; 17 141010 < schestowitz[TR]> twitter=one musk
13:43 MinceR; ew, all those stenches
13:44 MinceR; 17 141144 < immibis> if "rapemeat.solutions" is a real fediverse instance (I found it on a blocklist) then apparently ISP censorship is not that big of a deal
13:44 MinceR; i think DNS censorship is more aimed at protecting Imaginary Property
13:44 XRevan86; schestowitz: Atom/RSS is a way to present the information, it's (not accurately) analogous to Nitter for Twitter.
13:45 immibis; MinceR: then why did they make the account there?
13:45 MinceR; they didn't know better
13:45 MinceR; also, apparently admins who don't know better like to copy entire lists of bans from other instances
13:46 immibis; so they can make a new account somewhere now that they do know better.
13:46 MinceR; yes, people can also stop using twitter and fediverse
13:47 immibis; they can stop using IRC
13:47 schestowitz[TR]; they should, MinceR
13:47 schestowitz[TR]; irc is very different
13:47 schestowitz[TR]; even if it older
13:48 schestowitz[TR]; fediverse: I need to wait 24 hours to read some reply to me
13:48 schestowitz[TR]; I may not even remember the context
13:48 schestowitz[TR]; no consistent topic
13:48 schestowitz[TR]; censorship across instances
13:49 schestowitz[TR]; irc: real time, on topic, one mod or a group of connected mods to speak to
13:49 immibis; IRC is the same as fediverse but without federation.
13:49 immibis; as far as censorship is concerned.
13:51 schestowitz[TR]; irc is not he original thing compared anyway, it was rss feeds
13:52 schestowitz[TR]; if or when you comment in someone's blog, that one person decides on censorship
13:53 schestowitz[TR]; similar issues in email
13:53 schestowitz[TR]; if you fancy analogies
13:53 schestowitz[TR]; few companies control the lion's share of relays
13:53 schestowitz[TR]; and they also maintain weird blacklists

23:00 DaemonFC; schestowitz[TR], Left this message for dad on Facebook.
23:00 DaemonFC; "Carl Farmer People lose neurons with age, but people who are stupid tend to think they're brilliant. It's called the Dunning-Kruger Effect.
23:00 DaemonFC; If we use simple logic, people like you and mom going through the second childhood because of cognitive decline are most likely suffering from Dunning-Kruger due to narcissism and loss of neurons and the fact that the brain tends to shrink with old age.
23:00 DaemonFC; An old body is like an old worn out car. Nothing works right anymore. Everything's trying to die. The dashboard light comes on, you fix it, and something else happens. The brain is like that too.
23:00 DaemonFC; People ignored Madame Harmon (what Roy calls Grandma after I explained her to him) until she was leaving the burners on for days with nothing on the stove and nearly killed a whole family in a minivan by crashing her Cadillac into them.
23:00 DaemonFC; I hope someone will look out for you and Jan."
23:04 DaemonFC; MinceR, That engine flush seems to have brought the oil pressure back up enough that the engine's computer is happy with it again.
23:04 DaemonFC; $20 gamble. Think I got lucky.
23:05 DaemonFC; It was that or spend lots of money paying a mechanic to tear things apart and clean them by hand.

23:27 DaemonFC; Zillow, the parasite that increased rents by buying homes to "roboflip", and then had to lay off more than half their workers due to the Fed rate hikes (NICE!) says rents are going down now.
23:27 DaemonFC; If you can live with family to avoid feeding the parasites (landlords) then I don't know what's wrong with that.
23:28 DaemonFC; You're doing me a favor by not bidding up the rent that we'll both have to pay if you get an apartment.

23:55 DaemonFC; I disabled the Linux Vendor Firmware Service on Fedora when I noticed that it wanted to allow Microsoft to get in and update the "dbx revocation list" in my uEFI firmware.
23:55 DaemonFC; Since I have Secure Boot off for good reasons, dbx doesn't concern me, and the last people I want monkeying around putting blobs somewhere in my firmware is Microsoft.
23:55 DaemonFC; They're either moving around backdoors or fumbling around and possibly breaking the computer, and you won't know why. Like they do with Windows Update.
