08:27 schestowitz; [new series]
08:27 schestowitz; I am tempted to use this for a publication, but need your permission.
08:27 schestowitz; > Permission grantedbut only if you make it a barn burner.
08:27 schestowitz; I'll take time to think how to 'budget' it for positive impact. I've called out Bishop for over 15 years. He's a male version of ZDNet's Microsoft Mary.
08:27 schestowitz; > At least he was cordial
08:27 schestowitz; > Tech journalists really are as stupid and compromised as we think
08:27 schestowitz; Don't be misled by the smiles. They make a living by propping up very malicious agenda. The smiles just keep them at it...
08:29 schestowitz-TR; draft
08:29 schestowitz-TR; first crude one with blanks
08:29 schestowitz-TR; so you can suggest stuff
08:29 schestowitz-TR; will add allchin quote
08:29 *britney has quit (Ping timeout: 2m30s)
08:34 Techrights-sec; ack
08:34 Techrights-sec; "We need to smile at Novell while we pull the trigger."
08:34 Techrights-sec; the Plaintiff's Exhibit about killing Mac conferences might be relevant also
08:34 Techrights-sec; and about how consultants sell out, it's their business model
08:34 Techrights-sec; again, when nicknames are used, always include the full, real name at least once
08:34 schestowitz-TR; sometimes I forget the given namess
08:34 schestowitz-TR; and so that takes more effort
08:34 schestowitz-TR; added more quotes (x3)
08:37 Techrights-sec; thanks
08:51 Techrights-sec; though the impact of the quotes would be very much improved by linking tothe
08:51 Techrights-sec; actual PXE documents, they're PDFs. Whether on TR or via Groklaw it is
08:51 Techrights-sec; essential to get people to look at the source documents!
08:51 Techrights-sec; There is no quote at the top.
08:51 Techrights-sec; The first quote is about "I've killed at least two Mace conferences" and that
08:51 Techrights-sec; links to your excellent post, but the original PDF needs a link there, too.
08:51 Techrights-sec; THe second quote, "This really isnt that hard" has no link yet.
08:51 Techrights-sec; It is very important to link to the PDFs!
08:51 Techrights-sec; I see there is a link to PXE3096 from the picture, but pictures are not
08:51 Techrights-sec; relvant, they are only nice extras
08:52 schestowitz-TR; 2 out of 3 link to the source of the quotes
08:52 schestowitz-TR; one links to the actual PDF, the one at the top
08:55 Techrights-sec; Primary sources have an impact that secondary sources can't even begin to
08:55 Techrights-sec; approach.
08:56 schestowitz-TR; I will have more chances (parts) to add more such quotes with direct links to PDF like evangelism is war
08:56 schestowitz-TR; good time to remind the ZDNet puddle and others
09:04 Techrights-sec; ack
09:04 Techrights-sec; I'd still advocate for repeating links to the primary sources throughout the
09:04 Techrights-sec; series
09:04 Techrights-sec; tweets are still only hearsay and highly filtered by twitter at that
09:04 schestowitz-TR; I try to balance speed with quality
09:04 schestowitz-TR; so my articles might still have typos, but not too many
09:04 schestowitz-TR; also, a lot of impact can come from irc
09:04 schestowitz-TR; as very few other sites ave them
09:04 schestowitz-TR; they rely on "tweets" and comments, which can be trolling and unmitigated mess
09:20 schestowitz-TR; ddi you hear anything about the chinese economy?
09:20 schestowitz-TR; covid aside
09:20 schestowitz-TR; rianne says that people are queuing at the bank
09:20 schestowitz-TR; cannot get paper notes
09:20 schestowitz-TR; and also 1000 yuan limit
09:20 schestowitz-TR; I don't suppose the media here knows much about what happens in china
09:20 schestowitz-TR; but china also canceled quite a few projects
09:20 schestowitz-TR; and it dooing trade (imports) from/with russia
09:20 schestowitz-TR; counterpunch did not have a wekeene edition this weekend
09:20 schestowitz-TR; that's a rare thing
09:20 schestowitz-TR; as noted in irc yesterday
09:20 schestowitz-TR; I reckon they'd mention china's affairs if it was something significant
09:20 schestowitz-TR; seems like those who don't gamblame with ("invest") their money
09:20 schestowitz-TR; risk is being stolen via the banks at some point
09:20 schestowitz-TR; so no safe haven
09:20 schestowitz-TR; inflation aisde
09:33 Techrights-sec; hadn't heard but it's maybe not such a big surprise
09:46 schestowitz-TR; [20:43] just noticed that about a day ago all new posts were "posted by"
09:46 schestowitz-TR; [20:43] without a name after that
09:46 schestowitz-TR; [20:43] not sure if suggestive of a new bug, thought I'd mention it
09:46 schestowitz-TR; [20:43] added drop cap effect for first letter, it's starting to look more like the drupal site, sans the bloat
09:46 schestowitz-TR; [20:43] and almost no images
09:46 Techrights-sec; checking
09:46 Techrights-sec; ok, there were two bugs hidden by one symptom, shoud be working now
09:46 Techrights-sec; I suppose an automatic default can be added by looking up the UID
09:47 schestowitz-TR; it already defaults to current user in entry phase
09:47 schestowitz-TR; it just didn't show anything in the resultsnt page
09:49 schestowitz;
09:49 schestowitz; Security expert Matthew Garrett blows up Windows by enabling the Microsoft 3rd Party UEFI CA certificate, then says the Bitlocker Backdoor (for police) saved his data from
09:49 -TechrightsBN/#boycottnovell-baronhk.wordpress.com | Security expert Matthew Garrett blows up Windows by enabling the Microsoft 3rd Party UEFI CA certificate, then says the Bitlocker Backdoor (for police) saved his data from the TPM. BaronHK's Rants
09:49 schestowitz; the TPM.
09:49 schestowitz;
09:49 schestowitz; Essentially, what Garrett is saying is that when you enable Microsofts 3rd Party UEFI CA certificate, which is what the shim that enables Security Theater Boot to work on GNU/Linux, is signed with, that the TPM will refuse to decrypt your Bitlocker volumes. Not that this could be any sort of an inconvenience. Right?
09:49 schestowitz; The TPM freaking out is a problem I ran into when I applied an official Lenovo UEFI update for March of 2021 on my ThinkBook 15 ITL Gen2.
09:49 schestowitz; There was no warning that this was even possibly going to happen, just like it seems there was no warning on Garretts laptop that enabling that certificate would destroy Windows and cause data loss due to the TPM and Bitlocker.
09:49 schestowitz;
09:49 schestowitz;
10:00 Techrights-sec; yes, there were two bugs hidden there
10:09 schestowitz-TR; do you want me to start adding code to git?
10:09 schestowitz-TR; i have time today...
10:09 schestowitz-TR; kaniini made no progress
10:13 Techrights-sec; I'd rather have the Git repository on the new system

11:17 Techrights-sec; that'd be complicated but it can go on the todo list but it would be
11:17 Techrights-sec; difficult to work out the details to avoid collisions and other problems
11:17 Techrights-sec; The image capabilities would have to be added first, anyway.
11:17 Techrights-sec; or /both/ ocd and a job :(
11:21 Techrights-sec; ack
11:21 schestowitz-TR; probably not necessary at all
11:21 schestowitz-TR; those images we added are just a "nice to have"
11:21 schestowitz-TR; I think we started this 2014 or 2015
11:21 schestowitz-TR; I've just added some notes
11:21 schestowitz-TR; all went OK
11:21 schestowitz-TR; names showing up
11:21 schestowitz-TR; one simple feature to make is
11:21 schestowitz-TR; create a page for each month
11:21 schestowitz-TR; as a sort of archive that lists all the posts
11:21 schestowitz-TR; as we do not do categories of "hashtags"
11:21 schestowitz-TR; the concept of hashes is passe
11:21 schestowitz-TR; I can see it becoming a thing is the past in a few years
11:22 Techrights-sec; ack
11:22 Techrights-sec; yes that might be useful as might be a page for each day
11:22 Techrights-sec; subject headings would be quite easy to include as another option
11:24 Techrights-sec; "hashtags" are already stupid, but do imitate keywords and subject headings
11:24 Techrights-sec; a little. Those can be quite useful.
11:24 Techrights-sec; whereas hashtags not so much
11:28 schestowitz-TR; technorati did it differently in the golden era of blogs
11:28 schestowitz-TR; a lot can be inferred from categories and generalised, e.g. remove plural form
11:28 schestowitz-TR; the db has had no new issues for days, but it misses old nodes, hence I want to revert back to a backup and start using the new cms asap
11:28 schestowitz-TR; assuming any errors can be corrected ah hoc
11:28 schestowitz-TR; what's really important is rss feed anyone can parse even if the original rss address redirects
11:28 schestowitz-TR; the current xml file in the new CMS is interpreted as flat lines in firefox
11:28 schestowitz-TR; as i's using SOCKS proxy I canbnot see how rss readers ahndle it
11:30 schestowitz-TR; we could deplooy a similar thing to TR, but not before OS migration
11:30 schestowitz-TR; e.g. to post IRC log pages into
11:30 schestowitz-TR; in an automated fashion
11:30 schestowitz-TR; wordpress should not be needed for these
11:42 Techrights-sec; ack
11:49 schestowitz-TR; 2 mins saved x 365 days = ~ 10 hours
11:49 schestowitz-TR; I've just checked all the accounts in /home
11:49 schestowitz-TR; a lot are stale, munin, nagius
11:49 schestowitz-TR; the main ones are BN, links, and git
11:50 schestowitz-TR; there is one callaed "linker", I think a discountinued predecessor of links
11:50 schestowitz-TR; that'll be a much harder machine to migrate, there's also a lot of stuff in /root
11:51 Techrights-sec; ack, efficiency always pays off
11:51 Techrights-sec; posting IRC logs takes around 5 minutes on average, I would guess
11:51 Techrights-sec; when it is done manually
11:51 Techrights-sec; it could be easily automated if WP were not so unnecessarily, damn complicated
12:19 schestowitz-TR; lol, lunduke subscriptiopn price up from 5 usd to 8 usd
12:19 schestowitz-TR; 60%
12:19 schestowitz-TR; why?
12:19 schestowitz-TR; "inflation sucks"
12:19 schestowitz-TR; I wonder how many people pay for him or for phoronix

12:37 schestowitz-TR; I've nearly cleaned my feeds
12:37 schestowitz-TR; will make a vcideo later today
12:37 schestowitz-TR; probably epo video
12:37 schestowitz-TR; as for larabel, it looks to me like corporate stakeholders have taken precedence over readers
12:37 schestowitz-TR; and that's why any reader buying subscription is imho misguided
12:37 schestowitz-TR; I saw all of today's (morning) articles, none was of any interest
12:43 schestowitz-TR; we use what's available
12:43 schestowitz-TR; atm, acc to rianne:

12:47 schestowitz-TR; aiming to do 10 a day
12:47 schestowitz-TR; but not enough proper topics
12:47 schestowitz-TR; so some are just repetition of some announcment -- the sort of stuff I put in TM
12:47 schestowitz-TR; but the solution of michael is imho unsavoury
12:47 schestowitz-TR; you can imgine his power bills this past year
12:47 schestowitz-TR; afaik, his wife's family is in ukraine
12:47 schestowitz-TR; but i am not 100% sure
12:50 Techrights-sec; ack
12:58 Techrights-sec; i'm going to have to make some changes to the db structure, the easiest way
12:58 Techrights-sec; will be to nuke and pave and start over; I'll do that in a few hours
12:58 schestowitz-TR; yes, if you change the scheme we can reset
12:58 schestowitz-TR; I added notes for both of us to test and then observe
12:58 schestowitz-TR; schema, not scheme
12:58 schestowitz-TR; one thing I noticed was, the rss generated did not render correctly in firefox
12:59 Techrights-sec; thanks
12:59 Techrights-sec; yes the schema has to change and, for performance reasons, the columns
12:59 Techrights-sec; should be in a different order so that means redoing one table
13:01 Techrights-sec; never mind, it seems I already implemented the schema change, I just need
13:01 Techrights-sec; to modify the scripts to work with -- after a little clean up
13:01 Techrights-sec; I use SQL so rarely that I manage to forget everything about it in between
13:11 schestowitz-TR; We used to say Twitter would be dead in a few years. That was wrong. In a lot of ways (e.g. financial, impact, momentum) Twitter is ALREADY dead. It's just not declaring or stating that publicly. It's still just faking a lot of things.

17:22 schestowitz-TR; Phoronix slowinng down. 5 posts in weekends, used to be about 10.
17:32 Techrights-sec; ack
17:32 Techrights-sec; the update script updates the SQL database but the extraction script needs more
17:32 Techrights-sec; work
17:33 schestowitz-TR; thanks, hopefully updated posts are identified as newer and show up at the top again
17:33 schestowitz-TR; as updates typically mean followup added and strung onto a previous page
17:33 schestowitz-TR; to avoid duplication of stories/themes
17:33 Techrights-sec; no but the dc.date.modified is updated (I think) and the filesystem time stamp
17:33 Techrights-sec; is updated
17:35 Techrights-sec; but for now the extraction script does not overwrite existing files so that
17:35 Techrights-sec; has to be adjusted first
17:37 schestowitz-TR; I see
17:37 schestowitz-TR; at the moment when upadint the front page it shows up blank for a couple of seconds
17:37 schestowitz-TR; as the file is being rewritten
17:37 schestowitz-TR; one fix would be writing to a temporary file, then swapping over when done
17:37 Techrights-sec; yes, that's perhaps the most practical approach
17:38 schestowitz-TR; on a beefier server that might be 0.2s, not 2s
17:38 schestowitz-TR; but cp temp live
17:38 schestowitz-TR; is like 0.002s
17:47 Techrights-sec; speed is not critical there
17:48 schestowitz-TR; yes, as both files are valid ones
17:48 schestowitz-TR; at the time of the copying
17:48 schestowitz-TR; the file system just has a pointer changed to reference another block
17:48 schestowitz-TR; the newwe one
18:15 Techrights-sec; I see the problem with the extraction / update, it's using the wrong date
18:15 Techrights-sec; for the destination;
18:15 Techrights-sec; temporary fix in place, a more substantial change will be needed to
18:15 Techrights-sec; query the whole database; It's probably a case for a join, so I will have
18:15 Techrights-sec; to do some experiments with the SQL queries first before returningto scripting
18:46 Techrights-sec; and the feed.xml generator will need checking
18:46 Techrights-sec; fixed the SQL query in the feed generator to work against the date.modified
18:46 Techrights-sec; (I think)
18:47 schestowitz-TR; excellent, I told rianne an hour ago we'd no longer need to add comments
18:47 schestowitz-TR; and instead just edit existing pages
18:47 schestowitz-TR; if they're then "bumped" in the feed, that's extra good
18:47 schestowitz-TR; in drupal it could nto work this way
18:58 Techrights-sec; still tweaking that but it;s withiin easy reach
18:58 schestowitz-TR; at some point we can improve cross-site (tm/tr/irc) workflow to better discoverage and arrange news, I think
18:58 schestowitz-TR; but I'm not suure how, I just know there's replicated effort across sites sometimes
18:58 schestowitz-TR; but we're like the only site doing that at this deapth level
18:58 schestowitz-TR; esp. TM
18:58 schestowitz-TR; rianne won't have more spare time than before as she intends to keep the job
18:58 schestowitz-TR; the next stage for phopronix is "running intereferences" for Microsoft like SJVN does
18:58 schestowitz-TR; to borrow the words used by lunduke
18:58 schestowitz-TR; expect money to be allocated to this
18:58 schestowitz-TR; phoronix crossed some red lines
18:58 schestowitz-TR; it used to be a lot better
18:58 schestowitz-TR; go to front page now, see top stories
18:58 schestowitz-TR; chaff and cruft
18:58 schestowitz-TR; I see you've left our linux9to5 for now
18:59 Techrights-sec; sadly that is probably the forecast for phoronix
18:59 Techrights-sec; that is just a matter of regenerating the feed list but that will be in a bit
18:59 Techrights-sec; once the generator is updated
19:06 schestowitz-TR; yes, time is not important in that context
19:06 schestowitz-TR; as topics are all over the place and order/sequence is almost arbitrary
19:06 schestowitz-TR; just so you know, i am going through linuxhint at the moment
19:06 schestowitz-TR; it became a blend of spam, microsoft (lots of powershell at the moment), and at best 50% signal
19:06 schestowitz-TR; the name linuxhint is misleading
19:06 schestowitz-TR; they obv. changed strategy
19:06 schestowitz-TR; discord, laptop webspam (with amazon urls)
19:06 schestowitz-TR; this is what sickens me about thew web I need to PRE-filter the feeds before I even get to the nitty gritty signal and details
19:07 Techrights-sec; we're not tracking time just date, I suppose that is an acceptable level
19:07 Techrights-sec; of detail
19:07 Techrights-sec; ok thanks
19:07 Techrights-sec; dreadful
19:07 Techrights-sec; it's not just that it may be only 50% signal, the rest seems quite harmful
19:07 Techrights-sec; to the public
19:07 Techrights-sec; ok the feed.xml should be ok now
19:09 schestowitz-TR; yes, I put them in panalty box/suspension for a ahilw in the past under the assumption linking to them links TR and TM to sites
19:09 schestowitz-TR; that are detected as spam or send readers to Microsoft, sales, etc.
19:09 schestowitz-TR; at which point they become like phoronix or worse
19:09 schestowitz-TR; like linking to a "good" article in Bill's Guardian
19:09 schestowitz-TR; then people stay around for the bILLshit
19:10 Techrights-sec; ok the feed.xml should be ok now
19:10 Techrights-sec; ok the feeds.html shoud be ok too
19:10 schestowitz-TR; can your quiterss s/w parse that feed at your end? I cannot do SOCKS proxy here
19:12 Techrights-sec; checking
19:12 Techrights-sec; yep, QuiteRSS can use the feed just fine!
19:13 schestowitz-TR; good, this means firefox xml/rss support has become so appalling
19:14 schestowitz-TR; it's not pretending they exist
19:14 schestowitz-TR; and does not parse them well either
19:14 schestowitz-TR; they used to be a key reason p[eople were adopting rss around 2004
