Summary: IBM never had an interest in bringing back OpenSource.com (in any shape or form); 3 months later we remind people of the empty promises and hollow gestures
ANOTHER month passes by without IBM fulfilling its empty promises regarding OpenSource.com. The site was essentially killed off with the layoffs (this past spring) and there’s no sign of it coming back. It issued a terse statement in June a day or so after we had noted the demise of OpenSource.com and it went sort of ‘viral’.
“Thankfully, in 2023, there are still many alternatives available (but fewer over time).”
The video above discusses what IBM has done to Fedora, RHEL, CentOS, and even Container Linux (CoreOS), which was completely discontinued. OpenSource.com was not the only Red Hat site that IBM decided to shut down and it’s not because the Web is declining but because IBM is declining its obligations to the Free software community. This isn’t going to end to well. People ought to consider adoption of community-run distros which don’t just copy everything from Fedora (IBM), i.e. they have a go at taking back control over the stack. Thankfully, in 2023, there are still many alternatives available (but fewer over time). █
