THE DIRECTION the Web has taken is as disturbing as the direction Web browsers have taken because they’re closely intertwined; the servers and users exchange information based upon some standards or non-standards. The more complex browsers become, the more cruft will get sent by the servers and standards will cease to matter when one codebase dominates about 99% of Web browsers.

WordPress is an example of widely-deployed server-side software that gets more complicated and more bloated all the time, basically an anathema or an ‘antithesis’ to things like Gemini. I started using and deploying WordPress several times in 2004, i.e. one year after it started. So I saw how it was getting more and more bloated (or complex) over time when I was more closely involved in the project.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with WordPress for those who wish to build complex sites. Drupal too is highly extensible. Bub there are many problems as outlined in the videos above and there’s growing technical debt. Gemini provides an escape from all that and Ryan has therefore adopted it some days ago. He converted all his recent posts to GemText. █
