=> ↺ Xe’s Blog ☛ Syncing my emulator saves with Syncthing
- One of the most common upsells in gaming is “cloud saves”, or some encrypted storage space with your console/platform manufacturer to store the save files that games make. Normally Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and probably EA offer this as a service to customers because it makes for a much better customer experience as the customer migrates between machines. Recently I started playing Dead Space 2 on Steam again on a lark and I got to open my old Dead Space 2 save from college. It’s magic when it works.
- I own these two games on cartridge and I have dumped my copy of them from cartridge using a hackable Switch.

Slackware Family
=> ↺ Eric Hameleers ☛ Chromium 114 Early Release on Slackware
- An “early release” of Chromium 114 source code was published a few days ago, the release notes are on the developer blog. Since Chromium 110, Google rolls out new major releases to a small sub-set of its users to monitor any potential breakage and apply fixes before the majority of users get upgraded. The formal release of Chromium will be on May 30th, but I decided to go along with the early release this time, and offer this version to Slackware users already this weekend, to celebrate the Pentecost.
- Looking at the new stuff in Chromium 114, there’s two things you might want to play with, since they are already contained in the browser and mostly usable in Chromium 114, but not yet enabled by default.

- “We’re in one of those [game-changing] moments right now. It’s the moment of AI,” said Hicks during his keynote at the Boston Convention Center today. “AI has moved from the obscurity of academia to the ubiquity of ChatGPT. But it’s also moved from the power of few, to the power of many.”

=> ↺ TechCrunch ☛ Red Hat brings generative AI to IT automation with Ansible Lightspeed
- Red Hat is holding its annual customer summit in Boston this week, and today it announced a couple of enhancements to Ansible, its open source IT automation tool, including the new AI-fueled Lightspeed.
- Automation at its core is about distilling complex processes into a playbook or recipe of actions. The next step is building low-code and no-code workflows. The recent rise of generative AI could strip that process down even more to simply describing the process and letting the tool do the rest, creating a set of steps and providing the necessary code and tools to move it through a work process without much further human intervention required (at least in theory).

=> ↺ Valhalla’s Things: Correspondence Book
- I write letters. The kind that are written on paper with a dip pen 1 and ink, stamped and sent through the post, spend a few days or weeks maturing like good wine in a depot somewhere2, and then get delivered to the recipient.
- Some of them (mostly cards) are to people who will receive them and thank me via xmpp (that sounds odd, but actually works out nicely), but others are proper letters with long texts that I exchange with penpals.
- Most of those are fountain pen frea^Wenthusiasts, so I usually use a different ink each time, and try to vary the paper, and I need to keep track of what I’ve used.
=> ↺ Valhalla’s Things: Late Victorian Combinations
- Some time ago, on an early Friday afternoon our internet connection died. After a reasonable time had passed we called the customer service, they told us that they would look into it and then call us back.
- On Friday evening we had not heard from them, and I was starting to get worried. At the time in the evening when I would have been relaxing online I grabbed the first Victorian sewing-related book I found on my hard disk and started to read it.

=> ↺ Hackaday ☛ Nice Try, But It’s Not Aperture Synthesis
- Some of the world’s largest radio telescopes are not in fact as physically large as they claim to be, but instead are a group of telescopes spread over a wide area whose outputs are combined to produce a virtual telescope equal in size to the maximum distance between the constituents of the array. Can this be done on the cheap with an array of satellite dishes? It’s possible, but as [saveitforparts] found out when combining a set of Tailgater portable dishes, not simply by linking together the outputs from a bunch of LNBs.

=> ↺ Hackaday ☛ Learning 3D Printing Best Practices From A Pro
- It might seem like 3D printing is a thoroughly modern technology, but the fact is, it’s been used in the industry for decades. The only thing that’s really new is that the printers have become cheap and small enough for folks like us to buy one and plop it on our workbench. So why not take advantage of all that knowledge accumulated by those who’ve been working in the 3D printing field, more accurately referred to as additive manufacturing, since before MakerBot stopped making wooden printers?
=> ↺ Hackaday ☛ Restoring Dot Matrix Printer Cartridges For 2023
- The noise of a dot matrix printer is probably as synonymous with 1980s computing as the modem handshake would become with the desktop experience a decade or more later. But unlike the computers that would have driven it, a dot matrix printer can still be a very useful device here in 2023. And why not? They’re cheap to operate and can produce surprisingly good quality when paired with suitable drivers. There is a snag though; while cartridges for popular models can still be found, there are plenty whose consumables are long gone. [Drygol] had an Apple ImageWriter II with exactly that problem, and after finding all his cartridges were non-functional, took a look at how to bring them back.
=> ↺ Ruben Schade ☛ A new old-stock floppy drive
- This will be a quick post in my Am386 board adventures today, but I received my new old stock Panasonic 3.5-inch high density floppy drive today this week, and it’s beautiful!
- I’ve had Mitsumi, Sony, Mitsubishi, and Samsung 3.5-inch drives growing up, but this is my first Panasonic that isn’t a 5.25-inch unit. One little Easter Egg that doesn’t come up well on camera is that the eject button is glossly! Maybe they figured the matt beige plastic doesn’t stand up to the rigours of regular pressing, so they buffed it to a shine to make it look deliberate.
=> ↺ Ruben Schade ☛ A cool Adaptec AHA-1542CP ISA SCSI card

=> ↺ Hackaday ☛ Generating Hydrogen Peroxide For Disinfecting Water Using A Solar-Driven Catalyst
- Ensuring that water is safe to use and consume can be a real chore, especially for those who live in impoverished areas without access to safe drinking water. Here is where researchers at Stanford University hope that their recently developed low-cost catalyst can make a difference. This catalyst comes in the form of nano-sized particles (nanoflakes) consisting out aluminium oxide, molybdenum sulfide, copper and iron oxide. When exposed to sunlight, the catalyst performs like a photon-sensitive semiconductor/metal junction (Cu-MoS2), with the dislodged electrons going on to react with the surrounding water, resulting in the formation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydroxy radicals.

=> ↺ China deletes 1.4 million social media posts in crack down on ‘self-media’ accounts
- China’s cyberspace regulator said 1.4 million social media posts have been deleted following a two-month probe into alleged misinformation, illegal profiteering, and impersonation of state officials, among other “pronounced problems.” The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) said in a statement on Friday it had closed 67,000 social media accounts and deleted hundreds of thousands of posts between March 10 and May 22 as part of a broader “rectification” campaign. Since 2021, China has targeted billions of social media accounts in a bid to “clean” its cyberspace and make it easier for authorities to control. The latest crackdown targeted accounts on popular Chinese social media apps including WeChat, Douyin, and Weibo that fall under the category of “self media,” a term that broadly refers to accounts that publish news and information but are not government-run or state-approved.

=> ↺ Hackaday ☛ Where Exactly Did That Network Packet Come From?
- Have you ever noticed that some websites can figure out, at least roughly, where you are? Sometimes they use it to find you a closer content provider. Or they might block you from seeing certain things while offering you other things specific to your location. This is possible because there are databases that map IPs to locations. [Mark Litwintschik] looks at using those databases from an API or downloading them into your own database. He also shows some very large database queries, which is interesting, too. He uses IPInfo, although there are other providers. Some only provide a limited number of lookups, but there are plenty of free tiers for low-volume usage.

- Prof. Chris Holman recently characterized Amgen v. Sanofi as an “endorsement of the Federal Circuit’s current interpretation and application of the enablement requirement, and maintenance of the status quo.” Although I largely align with Holman’s views, I note that the Supreme Court did not explicitly engage with Federal Circuit precedent. More specifically, the Court neither cited nor discussed any Federal Circuit or CCPA decision outside of case-specific historical documents.

- Two weeks ago I finally bought a bicycle. I went to a bike shop where they do measure you and based on your criteria that you gave them beforehand, they propose a bike that should fit your needs. They also mount everything based on your sizes.
- Of course it costs more than buying in a shopping mall, but as I have no idea about bicycles it was a safe choice. This way I also do not have to worry about maintenance, they do everything and I just have to reserve a time slot online and drop off the bike in the shop. They also have a bike wash.

- I have encountered a few complaints that the domain name of this site, Geminispace.org, is problematic because it can be somewhat ambiguous and misleading: it may be unclear whether one means just this capsule or Geminispace as a whole — a collection of Gemini capsules and the people who maintain them. One might react to this dismissively and think that a name is just a name, but I want to give this topic some serious consideration.
