• In February I replaced a Dell T320 server with a HP Z640 workstation for a home server/workstation [1]. The T320 has 83.5″ drive bays which I had used to put 34TB disks in a BTRFS RAID-10 array for 6TB of usable capacity. The Z640 has only 23.5″ bays and 42.5″ bays, so one option I could have taken was to buy a 4TB 2.5″ SSD and keep the same 34TB array as before. Instead I chose to use an 8TB disk I had spare in an array with one of the original 4TB disks and some extra on NVMe devices (the system has 21TB NVMe devices which are used as a 380G RAID-1 for the root filesystem and the rest for the storage array). It’s nice how BTRFS allows putting any storage you have in a RAID-10 configuration.

Iran police arrested and detained Salehi for taking part in protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini, who was killed while in custody for improper dressing.

• It is clear that the death of the university student Dina, is not an “unexpected” but “expected” one with hatred toward migrants agitated by many. The opposition parties have to speak up urgently in order to stop such hostility.

• President Marc Tessier-Lavigne and Provost Persis Drell wrote to the Stanford community that an open dialogue on unionization will be maintained while cautioning them on the gravity of the decision they each have to make.

• An esteemed activist says a constitutionally enshrined Indigenous voice would benefit all Australians and help close the disadvantage gap.   Jack Beetson, who co-founded Aboriginal education initiative Literacy for Life and sat on the referendum working group, said concerns about racial divisions were unfounded.

=> ↺ US district courts issue competing opinions on abortion pill mifepristone

• The US District Court for the Northern District of Texas Friday suspended the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) approval of the abortion pill mifepristone. Later on Friday, the US District Court for the Eastern District of Washington issued a competing opinion ruling that mifepristone is safe and effective.
