WINE or Emulation
=> ↺ WINE gets support for Wayland • The Register
- With WINE 8 out, the team is merging in the code changes to add support for the Wayland display server protocol.
- Although the process began last Friday, the introductory notes on the merge do say: “This is the first of (many) parts in the upstreaming of the Wayland driver for Wine.” WINE 8.0 came out just a month earlier so this functionality will take a while to make it into the mainstream. WINE 7.0 appeared about one year earlier so this will probably appear in WINE 9.0 at the start of 2024.
- Wayland is getting increasingly common: it’s the default display server for most GNOME-based distros now. Ubuntu made it the default in version 21.04, and Fedora way back in version 25. However, most still include the XWayland layer to support legacy X11 apps. So while WINE can run on Wayland-based distros right now, that only works via translation. The new code will make WINE talk directly to the new display server without going through this intermediary.

In the process, the unknown threat actor was able to steal valid credentials from a senior DevOps engineer and access the contents of a LastPass data vault. Among other things, the vault gave access to a shared cloud-storage environment that contained the encryption keys for customer vault backups stored in Amazon S3 buckets.

About a quarter of the hacking was aimed at North America, while most of it targeted China’s Asian neighbors, the report found. Personal
=> ↺ Temporary Prescence
- This is a rather odd thing to converse about while I wait for my beer, but it has been egging me on lately because a possible (key: possible) new person has entered my life. However, I know since its online, its very easy to lose contact and I fear this will happen again due to my usual inaction or something out of my control. I get saddened by this fact, but alas this is normal, especially in online spaces. You really like talking to someone, and it goes really really well! But then all of a sudden, they don’t speak to you again. Proof that just because someone has a really good conversation with you doesn’t mean they’ll be your friend, and that’s is fine.
=> ↺ Spruce Twigs and Needles
- I have been doing some research lately into plant life in Alaska, and was most recently reading up on White Spruce. So, I got the idea to clip the end of a branch from off a spruce tree here in my yard (in Fairbanks) and take some photos with the coin microscope. I believe the tree is common White Spruce, but it was twilight and I didn’t get too good of a look at it before clipping off the branch.
=> ↺ Long socks
- Long socks are uncomfortable. I have a pair of short socks, but I couldn’t find them anywhere.
- Long socks — it takes time to take it off, it takes time to put it on. I don’t like to wear long socks.
=> ↺ DEAD WHALE HIVE WHALE
- Wrote this for a text game I never published. You play as a mote of consciousness rediscovering her body as she undergoes surgery to become the pilot (human liaison) for a mech (sentient ecosystem).
Technical
=> ↺ tldr in gemtext 🖥️📚
- For command line help, man pages are thorough. The information you want is probably in there somewhere. But I’d prefer a few examples to get me started. The tldr project does exactly that. So I translated their pages to gemtext, and put up a list of them.
=> ↺ Revamped my Gemini mirror of The Anarchist Library
- A while back I had set up a Gemini frontend for a mirror of The Anarchist Library. It lacked a few key features such as the ability to enter search queries. I lost the motivation to work on it for quite a while after I was disappointed with how it had turned out.
- Over the last week or so I’ve spent about two dozen hours rebuilding the thing from the ground up to be more performant and feature-rich. It’s written in C# using .NET 7, with MariaDB as the backing data store. The capsule now supports search queries that are evaluated against document metadata (title, notes, etc.), authors, and topics.
- Part of the rebuild was implementing a parser for the AmuseWiki file format that The Anarchist Library stores its documents in. This way I no longer have to rely on pandoc, which is a behemoth in terms of resource usage. Rendering un-cached documents should be much quicker now, and won’t crash the service on larger files.
