●● Microsoft Co-Develops Mono With Novell

Posted in GNU/Linux, Microsoft, Mono, Novell, Ubuntu at 2:49 pm by Dr. Roy Schestowitz

Summary: Parts of Mono 2.8 developed and licensed (MS-PL) by Microsoft employees, not just former Microsoft employees

MICROSOFT need no longer pretend to be separate from projects like Mono and Moonlight (or "Microsoft Moonlight" as its joint Web site calls it). According to Microsoft MVP Miguel de Icaza, Microsoft MS-PL-licensed code is now coming to Mono. Fusion at last.

Over the past couple of years Microsoft has been open sourcing some key .NET libraries under the MS-PL or Apache 2 license. We are tremendously grateful to Microsoft for making these components open source. This has allowed us to distribute this in the past, and we are going to be bundling a lot more of it with Mono 2.8…

Microsoft licences in projects like Mono and Trojans like Moonlight ought to be enough of a warning sign. How much would users and developers appreciate Microsoft code right inside Ubuntu for example, with Microsoft licences too? Canonical ought to abolish Mono fast enough to avoid Mono 2.8 (there's just Tomboy and gbrainy left in Ubuntu 10.10). Canonical’s CTO knows about the issue with Mono and Microsoft control/patents. █
