Getting Over Getting Dumped

I get dumped more often than I'd like to admit. Well, I guess I'm admitting it right now to the tens of people reading this, but still. I just got dumped out of nowhere, again, so I went through my usual processes of getting over it and I figured I'd share what I do with all y'all for some fucking reason.

Mope

I'm all about the mope, especially for the first few days after the axe gets dropped on your relationship. No matter the reason given for ending the relationship (I've heard my fair share of unique reasons) losing that relationship is an emotional shock to the system and you're going to feel that physically.

I tend to isolate from those around me and get quiet and dower. Do whatever feels right to you. The key is to feel your feelings and let it all out. Some breakups are worse than others, so how long you need to mope changes.

Indulge In Comfort Media

Escapism is a necessary soothing balm for a broken heart. Escaping into different forms of media can be very helpful.

For me, I re-watch one of my favourite shows: Lovesick. It's all about relationships and it hits all the right buttons atop being a fantastic show in its own right. By the end of the last episode of the last season, I re-emerge a healed man.

I've started calling this show my sadboi show and I recommend everyone find one for themselves.

In my latest breakup I've also found the song I listen to on repeat as I walk around wallowing, and it not-so-coincidentally comes from the soundtrack of my sadboi show. The song is Riverside by Agnes Obel. Hits ya right in the heart.

Get Them Good Chemicals Coursing Through You

Up the feel-good chemicals in you brain. I'm not much of a substance user (i.e. alcohol, weed, etc.) so I just resort to intense exercise and sports to get my blood pumping and endorphins surging. It also helps to get a nice pump on after lifting weights for a much needed ego-boost.

I wouldn't endorse over-indulgence in whatever it is you choose to do or consume, but it doesn't hurt to take the edge off in whatever way works best for you.

Recovery

Eventually you'll move on from your heartbreak and life won't feel as bleak. You'll probably get hit with sudden emotions every now and then remembering the good times and how that relationship made you feel. That's a good thing. We're emotional beings and relationships of all kinds make us who we are. The person you are today is because of both the good and bad relationships of the past. Honour those emotions and thank the universe you made it to where you are now, a new, more resilient person.

Loss and heartbreak comes part and parcel with being a living, breathing human being. I never let the potential for heartbreak in the future stop me from loving to the fullest in the present. I feel with all my heart and put every bit of me into whatever relationship I'm growing. As a result, I am jubilant and joyous in my relationships, hopeful and excited. This also means the fall of that relationship hits just as hard, the pain feels deeper and sorrow more profound.

But I know I will get back up and move forward, because that's what life is about.
