There are less than ten thousand citizens of Monaco, which limits the country's chance of producing a race winner. But a Monegasque won the the Monaco Grand Prix today. Charles Leclerc watched the race as a child and caught the bus to school from the finish straight.
He won in strange way. There was a big three way crash on lap one (no one hurt, but there wasn't much left of Perez's car). So the race was stopped and re-started, but that meant that everyone was now trying to finish the race on one set of tyres. To make them last, they drove several seconds off the pace, safe in the knowledge that overtaking is almost impossible. So Leclerc started first and finished first. It was a dull race, but no one begrudged Leclerc his win.
Verstappen was only sixth. It seems that maybe he won't have it quite so easy this year. He's been beaten twice, and even when he's won, he's had to work for it. Maybe the other teams have made progress in catching up with Red Bull. But it still feels like nothing is going to stop Verstappen winning the championship.
