Someone[a] actually sent me a private email mentioning ‘#hashtags’. i have a few reasons i don't want to use inline hashtags:
- A relevant tag might not be naturally part of the text. For example, my recent post “Error messages” is something i'd want to tag with ‘ict’ (a tag i regularly use in my buku database), but the post doesn't contain that text.
- Personally, find them distracting when they appear in longer-form writing.
- i probably got overloaded on them from using Twitter years ago.
- i'm not currently on any microblogging platform, so my current associations with them are of people using them jokingly to create a certain effect.
i was also trying to avoid using the English word ‘tags’, because (even though i'm a native English speaker) i'd prefer a signifier that was language neutral.
Which means i like the idea of ‘🏷’! This possibility didn't occur to me, but since others are using it, i'm happy to join in.
