sergeeo's personal capsule

More Gemini Stuff

So I've been thinking about taking the final step: shutting down my old blogspot site. I've been using it since 2009 and it reflects a lot of my growing passion for electronic music, synths, video games and game jams of all kinds. I'd like to get everything out using the XML exporter and use a Python script to extract all the text to clean up the raw .txt files (which is what I'm using for this capsule). My intention is to republish some of that content here, after some curation work... The vast majority of the stuff is just personal and uninteresting, but I'd like to keep some of it online, even if no one will ever read it. If that was my concern, I would have stopped writing a long time ago.

It would be cool if I could also help some kind of tool to have an html version of this capsule. I asked on Mastodon a few days ago and it seems that it's not difficult to do. I'll wait for it, because I want to finish writing all the content I want to have here first!

More degoogling

In my degoogling process, I've started using Nextcloud and so far the experience is quite nice. The only thing that has really bothered me is that the desktop application requires a reboot after updating in Windows.

Next step should be to try LineageOS? I've read that it seems to work well on my device, and the process seems to be fairly well documented in step-by-step guides. My experience with ADB in the past has been brief and terrible...

Regarding leaving Gmail... I feel like I don't really need a real email account? I've been reading about the death of email for years, and now I think I'm a believer: email is dead. It's a service I adore, but let's face it, it's beyond obsolete. The only thing I use it for is to receive shopping receipts and to log in to a few websites. I hardly ever use it to contact anyone. It's just not as valuable as it used to be. There are easier ways to share things with your family, friends or colleagues and... Oh, think of your younger colleagues! They don't use email anymore!

Archiving my game music collection

I have been downloading lots of game music rips for ages and... the time has come to tag and organise all those folders. I use foobar2000, which is a very handy player that suits my needs! I used to have a lot of this music in FLAC, but decided to reduce it to 320kbps mp3s, which was more than enough at a fraction of the size. This is a lot of work that I will have to do gradually as it can get very annoying quite quickly.

Recording some standards

Something I'd like to do is record some of the standards I've been learning on the guitar, so I can keep track of my improvements (or lack of) with the instrument. Also, I feel like I always play the same three or four when I have the time, and I'd like to delve into some of the tunes I don't play as much. You know the old mantra: we practice more often the things we already know!

I don't think I find the time to do all these... but hey! I can always change the title in a couple of days as "New Year Resolutions" ;)
