here's what i listened to today:
=> Cloudling - Empty Of All False Dreams [neofolk/ambient]
=> À sa perte/Cross Contact/Profundae Libidines/Worhs - La Musique Est Morte Vol 1 [black metal]
=> High Vis - Guided Tour [post-punk]
=> Beborn Beton - To The Stars [synthpop]
=> Future Terror - Degenerating Shithole [d-beat]
=> Urskek - Thra [atmospheric sludge]
an atmospheric start to the morning with Empty Of All False Dreams. crisp folk instrumentation is interspersed and layered with field recordings and synths, a mix of organic environments and strange transmissions. i was listening to it as the sun rose over the city, which felt apropos. lovely, moving album.
i picked up the La Musique Est Morte Vol 1 sampler largely because i saw a new Cross Contact track on it and i enjoy their particular flavour of techno-dystopic industrial black metal. sadly i got tonal whiplash from both À sa perte's Impending and Profundae Libidines' Ma Go, so those weren't my thing. the second Profundae Libidines track and Worhs were a better fit for me as they didn't lean as much into post-black metal.
Guided Tour is catchy, glittering, grim, hardcore-influenced post-punk. i like the sense of space that the production conjures, especially with the vocals & guitars. High Vis strike a balance here, being pissed off at the absolute state of things without entirely losing optimism, which is a sentiment i appreciate a lot!
not into this Beborn Beton EP, feels a bit stale and way too on the corny side for me (yes, even by synthpop standards).
nothing like using something titled Degenerating Shithole as a palate cleanser. it's energetic, brutal & super crusty, plus i actually think it makes pretty good use of its chosen samples. All killer no filler on this one.
a Dark Crystal-inspired post-metal concept album was not on my bingo card but maybe it should have been, given such a rich world to explore. personal bias leads me to think i would enjoy a black metal or dungeon synth take on it more, or perhaps even just a version of this sans vocals. there is a little synth on here which helps add to the fantasy theme, and some samples from the film for scene-setting. overall it's a bit proggy to be my jam but a cool project and Trial By Stone did, in fact, slap.
