People here had quite a few interesting recommendations already, thank you all! If you enjoy deeper and a bit more abstract anime I'd personally suggest:

• Tatami Galaxy (+ "The Night is Short, Walk on Girl" and "Tatami Time Machine Blues" as sequels)
• Sonny boy
• Madoka Magica (+ Rebellion movie)
