That is indeed an odd claim.
I did some digging, the change to require javascript was announced on the Google security blog here:

So very likely it does actually relate to security, although they do not paint a picture as to how :) maybe something to do with rejecting attempts by bots to guess your password.

indeed, maybe. i used some non-js sites fine before they started to use cloudflare. then i had to enable js for cloudflare checks to work.

but yes, that wouldn't make the connection more secure. that's just the server can use cloudflare (another centralized entity that gathers data) to check for bots.
