An evening outing to the old stomping grounds to meet a friend for dinner, driving in to Richmond through Hawthorn an hour or so after sundown we could look up and see the fruit bats[1] milling about. A couple here, a couple there, getting themselves organised as they left the roostery? battery? roookery? that is up the river near Abbotsford and head out to forage in gardens and orchards for the night. Nowhere near as many as when there was the huge colony in the Botanic Gardens, but still individually impressive with their 1m wingspan
