Making More, Taking Less

31 August 2022

All my life I have been more of a consumer of stuff than a creator of it. I prefer reading to writing, for example. I read more about technical topics (programming languages, frameworks, programs, databases, whatever) than I actually go and use them. I read more code than I write. It also happens with photography; I read about it and look at way more photos than I actually take.

But I'm trying to change that. I'm trimming the amount of feeds I subscribe to, and I'm being more ruthless with them; I'm trying to only read one or two articles a day and just discard everything else in the feeds. I went back to programming in Rust in my free time, which will help me finally finish that emulator project of mine and, in the not-so-distant future, program games for my small daughter. I'm doing courses at work to learn how to make new things. Finally, I'm also taking more and more photographs every day (of my family instead of the street, because that's what actually matters).

I'll turn 40 in a couple of months, and I'm trying to change a lot of twenty-year-old habits. Is this midlife crisis?

Yesterday, I was wondering if Gemini being space-themed actually means, at least for me, than I can write freely, as if shouting into outer space. That is a really liberating thought.
