I saw a link to Programming is Forgetting: Toward a New Hacker Ethic presented by Allison Parrish at the Open Hardware Summit 2016 on Mastodon and since I’m following her on the same platform, I followed the link and started reading. What a wonderful talk! It basically starts with Hacker Ethics as it was promoted in the early days and takes it apart. And since I was myself so influenced by the Jargon file, all the talk about hackers and fixing, and all reading all of that made me feel like I belonged to this strange tribe, reading the transcript of Allison Parrish’s talk spoke to me on a personal level. Reading how some people “hacking” basically broke the system for Margaret Hamilton makes me angry, too!
