Justin Alexander posted an article talking about Save-or-Die effects. First he establishes a sequence of such effects: from Hold Person (save every round), to Sleep (others wake you), to Paralysis (others cure you if you have the right resource handy), to instant kills such as Finger of Death. He proposes a solution that translates most of these to something closer to hit points: Ability Damage. He proposes to that when the ability reaches zero, the effect mentioned in the spell description effectively happens, and the ability damage represents your gradual sliding into that zone.
I like it, but to be honest I would sort of like it even better if this meant getting rid of saving throws. 😄

Get rid of saving throws? You mean have static defenses instead, or get rid of any resistance mechanic altogether?

Yes, I like the concept of static defenses.
